November 4, 2008 Dmitri Young was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, according to the Associated Press. September 15, 2008 Dmitri Young underwent an MRI on his left hip on Monday. He could miss the rest of the season. "Being out for the year remains to be seen," Young tells MLB.com. "I have been diagnosed with a strained left hip." September 14, 2008 Young is nursing a left quad injury and will see a doctor in the next few days, the Nationals' team website reports. There is no timetable for his return. September 9, 2008 Dmitri Young has had a rough year with injuries and when he thought he was going to make it back after getting his diabetes under control, he injured his back. After getting to the ball park on Tuesday he was finally able to rejoin the Nats, according to MLB.com. September 7, 2008 Dmitri Young has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, according to Nationals.com. He was put on the DL because he had trouble getting his diabetes under control. September 4, 2008 Dmitri Young (diabetes), currently playing at Single-A ball, is expected to rejoin the Nationals next Tuesday, according to MLB.com. August 25, 2008 The Nationals are hopeful to get Dmitri Young back in around two weeks, according to the Washington Post. Young has been fighting to get his diabetes under control. August 22, 2008 Dmitri Young will be allowed to take part in baseball related activities now that his diabetes is under control, according to Nationals.com. August 15, 2008 Dmitri Young, who is dealing with diabetes, is not likely to return to the Nationals this season, according to the Washington Post. July 28, 2008 Dmitri Young is struggling to manage his diabetes and is not feeling well enough to travel, according to the Washington Post. He is still physically unable to begin a team recommended fitness program. GM Jim Bowden said, "We're praying for him. We'll do everything we can to get him healthy." July 21, 2008 GM Jim Bowden noted that Dmitri Young needs to gets into first-class physical shape before returning from the DL, according to the Washington Post. July 19, 2008 The Nats placed Dmitri Young on the DL Saturday in an effort to get Young's diabetes under control. He has been unable to play the last two games because lightheadedness and an inability to focus. July 19, 2008 Dmitri Young missed his second straight game Saturday because of symptoms related to high blood sugar, according to MLB.com. A diabetic, Young complained of feeling lightheaded and had difficulty focusing when he arrived at Turner Field Saturday. "[He's] pretty much the same," manager Manny Acta said. "He's still not feeling well enough to play." July 11, 2008 The AP reports that Dmitri Young left Friday night's game with soreness in his lower back. He walked off the field under his own power, with an 0-1 count. July 4, 2008 Dmitri Young went 2-for-2 in Friday's 3-0 shutout loss to the Reds in Cincinnati. He hit a single and a double, which accounted for the Nationals' only extra base hit of the day. June 9, 2008 Dmitri Young is back in the lineup Monday after missing three games with the flu. He is playing first base and batting cleanup. June 8, 2008 Dmitri Young missed his third straight game Sunday because of flu-like symptoms, according to MLB.com. Young was originally in Saturday's lineup but was a late scratch because of the illness. June 6, 2008 Dmitri Young did not play Friday due to the flu, according to the AP. Aaron Boone played first in place of Young, and Kory Casto replaced Boone at third. May 17, 2008 Dmitri Young returned to the diamond on Friday after spending a month on the shelf due to his lower back sprain, according to CBSsports.com. He will be worked in slowly as the DH, and then will be ready to play first base in place of the injured Nick Johnson. May 16, 2008 The Nationals activated Dmitri Young from the DL Friday. Young has been out nearly all year with a back ailment. May 15, 2008 Dmitri Young will be activated from the DL and resume the starting role at first base in place of the injured Nick Johnson, who will be out of action for four to six weeks due to a torn tendon in his right wrist, according to the AP. May 11, 2008 Dmitri Young will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday, the Washington Post reports. He does not have a timetable for his return from a sore lower back. May 2, 2008 Dmitri Young experienced a sudden and dramatic breakthrough with his back injury Wednesday when the Nationals massage therapist focused on the first baseman's hip flexor and not his back. "All of a sudden, he felt instant release," GM Jim Bowden said in the Washington Post. "She found the spot." Young will go to extended spring training Sunday, but the team has no timetable for his return. April 30, 2008 Dmitri Young, on the DL with an injured lower back, hasn't seen much improvement so he is searching for a second opinion at the Mayo Clinic, according to MLB.com. "He is not making progress," general manager Jim Bowden said. "He can't turn after he hits. We can't get him over the hump." April 8, 2008 The Nationals placed Dmitri Young on the DL Tuesday with a lower back sprain. The move is retroactive to April 3. Young has managed just two at-bats thus far. Johnny Estrada will be recalled from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus to replace Young on the roster. Nick Johnson will continue to see the bulk of the time at first base while Young is out. April 4, 2008 Dmitri Young has been sent back to Washington for treatment and further examination on his ailing back, according to the AP. An MRI on Young's back revealed inflammation, but manager Manny Acta said it was too soon to consider placing Young on the DL. The manager expects the situation to be resolved by the time the team returns home from St. Louis Monday. Keep Young on your bench until further notice. April 3, 2008 Dmitri Young's back flared up on him again Thursday, making him unavailable for a critical pinch-hitting opportunity in the ninth inning of what became an 8-7 loss, according to the Washington Post. Young had an MRI on his back, and the results will be known when the Nats reach St. Louis tomorrow. The team is listing Young as day-to-day for the time being. Nick Johnson will continue to see the bulk of the playing time at first. March 26, 2008 Dmitri Young is not a disabled list candidate despite his limited spring, the Washington Post notes. Young has appeared in seven games and logged only 23 at-bats due to a sore back. He is likely to open the season behind Nick Johnson at first base. March 18, 2008 Dmitri Young went 2-for-5 at the plate Tuesday, raising his spring batting average to .353. He's trying to hold of Nick Johnson for action at first base, so his hot spring is helping. On the other hand, Johnson isn't exactly going away, as he raised his spring average to .290 after going 3-for-3 with a walk on Tuesday. March 5, 2008 Dmitri Young has overcome many issues in the past with the most recent speed bump being diabetes, this according to ESPN. Because of the illness, Young came to camp tipping the scales at a whale-like 298 pounds, but at least there seems to be a medical explanation for it. Young will have to monitor the condition for the rest of his life, but since he was diagnosed in 2006 he has gone out and proven that he can overcome it and hit the heck out of the ball (.320-13-74 last year). March 4, 2008 Nats manager Manny Acta said Tuesday that he expects Dmitri Young to start a hitting program and soft tossing soon, according to the AP. Young hasn't played this spring due to tightness in his lower back and hip and currently is resting the sore muscles. So long as he gets back in action soon, he should be fine for opening day. March 2, 2008 Dmitri Young told the Washington Post that he'll likely need 3-4 days of rest for the strained muscles on his left side. "We're going to be cautious with him," manager Manny Acta said. Young hurt the muscles while taking a swing last week. This won't hurt his availability for the start of the season, but it could hurt him in his competition with Nick Johnson for playing time. March 1, 2008 Dmitri Young was scratched from Saturday's exhibition game due to a strain that runs from his side into his left quadriceps, according to the Washington Post. The soreness should only cost him a few days, barring something unexpected. February 18, 2008 Dmitri Young spent the off-season dealing with his diabetes and reported to camp on Monday in much better physical shape according to a report by the AP. Young will have to battle Nick Johnson in the spring for playing time at 1B, though all reports signal that Young is clearly in the lead for the starting spot a year after hitting .320. "One of us might get traded. It's a good thing when you're wanted, as well -- wanted by our team and maybe by someone else," Young said. Johnson has never been able to stay healthy, so there is no reason to expect him to be able to do so this year after a broken leg destroyed his 2007 season. February 16, 2008 Manager Manny Acta met with the media on Saturday afternoon and told the Washington Post he considers Dmitri Young his starting first baseman. The skipper listed veteran Ronnie Belliard his starting second baseman, Cristian Guzman his shortstop and said that Guzman would lead off. But -- and Acta stressed this several times -- "this could change." There is the possibility, with a healthy Nick Johnson (but for how long), Young is a candidate to be moved. February 16, 2008 The Nationals may look to trade either Nick Johnson or Dmitri Young this preseason. "If they're both healthy, logically, it may be possible one of them has to be moved to make that work. It doesn't mean we're going to, but it's something we may have to look at," general manager Jim Bowden tells the Washington Post.
