September 23, 2005 A sore right wrist kept Mark Loretta from playing yesterday, according to the AP. Loretta said he jammed the wrist two weeks ago when a baserunner knocked him down near second base. He hopes to return to the lineup tonight. May 24, 2005 Mark Loretta will have surgery on his injured left thumb today and will be out at least two months and possibly the rest of the season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The hand specialist who repaired a torn ligament in the same thumb in 2001 examined Loretta yesterday in Phoenix and determined he had ruptured a ligament. "But if he (Dr. Don Sheridan) needs to replace the ligament with one taken from my wrist, that's a six-month rehab process," Loretta said. May 23, 2005 Padres GM Kevin Towers announced Monday that Mark Loretta will undergo surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, according to the AP. Loretta is expected to play again this season, but no specific timetable for his return has been set. May 20, 2005 Mark Loretta will travel to Phoenix on Monday to meet with a doctor who treated his re-injured left thumb four years ago, according to the AP. He hasn't played since spraining the thumb on Tuesday. If Loretta needs surgery, he could miss up to three months. May 19, 2005 The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Mark Loretta will miss at least the next three games because of his sprained left thumb. Loretta will test the thumb next week after the swelling goes down. Although he could return next week, the disabled list or even surgery have not been ruled out. May 18, 2005 Mark Loretta is still on the 25-man roster while the Padres determine the severity of the sprained left thumb he suffered on Tuesday night, according to the AP. He had an MRI exam Wednesday morning. "We've got all the results," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's just a matter of which way we go, whether we wait three, four days and see where he's at, or DL him." May 17, 2005 Mark Loretta left the Padres' game in the fourth inning on Tuesday with a sprained thumb. He suffered the injury diving into first base the inning prior. He will be re-evaluated on Wednesday. April 14, 2005 Mark Loretta stole two bases on Wednesday, giving him three swipes this season. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Loretta predicted in February that he would have more steals this season and worked with two running coaches to achieve that goal. Loretta had five steals in each of the last two seasons.
