The Boston Herald reports that the Padres and Red Sox have a deal in place to send Mark Loretta to Boston in exchange for Doug Mirabelli. The report states that the Padres have requested that the deal not be announced for the time being, perhaps until the Trevor Hoffman situation is resolved.

Mark Loretta will have surgery on his injured left thumb today and will be out at least two months and possibly the rest of the season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The hand specialist who repaired a torn ligament in the same thumb in 2001 examined Loretta yesterday in Phoenix and determined he had ruptured a ligament. "But if he (Dr. Don Sheridan) needs to replace the ligament with one taken from my wrist, that's a six-month rehab process," Loretta said.
