All indications are that when the Dodgers start a six-game homestand on Friday, Garciaparra will be in Sacramento beginning a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas. That would place him on target to potentially return against the Pirates (series starts April 14), because he doesn't figure to need a lengthy rehab. Dodgers manager Joe Torre is considering the idea of using Nomar Garciaparra as a regular pinch-hitter, and as a utility infielder, because he could "give me flexibility with his versatility," according to the LA Times. Torre added that he'd understand that moving Garciaparra to a reserve role could be a sensitive issue. "The whole thing about [becoming a bench player] is resolving it with yourself," Torre said. "It's trying to make sense of the whole thing." Garciaparra will be pushed by Andy LaRoche for the starting job at third base. It'll be an interesting competition this spring, just as interesting as seeing how the veteran Garciaparra would handle moving to a reserve role if he loses the battle.
