The Rockies considered signing Neifi Perez to a minor league deal but opted against it on Tuesday, according to MLB.com. The club was contemplating bringing him in to add depth to their minor league system and to mentor players. Perez still has to serve the final 26 games of an 80-game suspension handed down last year for testing positive for a banned substance, but first, he'll have to find a team willing to sign him.

Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games Friday after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, according to the AP. He will miss the final 54 games of the regular season and finish serving the suspension next year, if he is signed.

Neifi Perez was suspended 25 games Friday, the first player penalized for testing positive for a stimulant under Major League Baseball's drug program, according to the AP. The suspension takes effect immediately. Perez would be eligible to return around Aug. 4 against the White Sox. Depending on off days, he will lose about $400,000 of his $2.5 million salary.

Neifi Perez was in the lineup and batted eighth in his debut with the Tigers Monday night. He went 0-for-4. Perez was acquired from the Cubs on Sunday for a minor league catcher.

The Tigers acquired Neifi Perez from the Cubs on Sunday in exchange for minor-league catcher Chris Robinson, according to the AP. With Placido Polanco on the DL, Perez will share time at second base with Omar Infante.
