Craig Biggio has announced that he plans to retire at the end of the 2007 season, according to the AP. "I get to go out on top. The 3,000th hit night was the best. Biggio is currently hitting .247 with five homers and 37 RBI on the year.

Craig Biggio got to 3,000 hits and beyond in style Thursday night, going 5-for-6 in Houston's dramatic extra-innings win over Colorado. The third hit, a single in the seventh inning, made Biggio the 27th player in major-league history to reach the 3,000 hit plateau. Biggio's final hit of the night was part of Houston's four-run rally in the eleventh inning, capped by Carlos Lee's walk-off grand slam.

Craig Biggio was not in the lineup on Monday night and was also scheduled to take Wednesday off during the Astros' three-game series against the Brewers, according to the AP. He is four hits shy of becoming the 27th player with 3,000 or more. "I just want it to happen, no matter when or where," he said. "Obviously, I'd love for it to happen in Houston, I think the fans in Houston deserve it, but we've got to win some games, so we'll see what happens."

Although Astros manager Phil Garner often gives Craig Biggio the day off on Sunday, he said he will likely play the second baseman today against St. Louis, the AP reports. Garner says he is cognizant of the fact that a lot of home fans would be disappointed if Biggio didn't play. "I like to try to play him at home as much as possible," Garner said. "If I drove an hour or something to the game, I'd like to see him play." Garner would also be wise to consider Biggio's home/road splits; the veteran hit .298 at Houston last year (along with 15 of his 21 homers), but Biggio's average dropped to .178 on the road.
