Renteria is a prototypical lead off hitter, this according to the Detroit News. "I'm thinking Renteria is the logical choice right now," Leyland said before the game, during which Renteria was 1-for-4. "I don't like to do it. I like him down a little bit more.
"It's just the way it is."
Leyland likely will not use Renteria exclusively in the No. 1 spot. Pudge Rodriguez could lead off against some left-handed pitchers, Leyland suggested. Renteria rarely strikes out, he's a terrific bad ball hitter, his career batting average of .291 and on-base percentage of .349 fits, and as a veteran he won't feel the need to press in April.
