According to the LA Daily News, Marcus Giles agreed in principle to a minor-league contract with the Dodgers today. He was to go to Triple-A Las Vegas to reacquaint himself with third base. However, as Giles was driving from his home in San Diego to Las Vegas, he apparently changed his mind, turned his car around and went home. It's not clear why he changed his mind, though one of the News' sources said Giles just doesn't have the desire to play anymore. He was released by the Rockies last week. Blake Dewitt will continue to start at third for the Dodgers until Nomar Garciaparra is ready.

Marcus Giles has been released by the Rockies, according to MLBTradeRumors.com. Jayson Nix has won the starting job at second base, making Giles expendable. The team was also unable to trade him.

There continues to be talk about veteran second baseman Marcus Giles heading to Los Angeles after being sent down by the Rockies Sunday. According to the Denver Post, with Dodgers infielders Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra expected to start the season on the disabled list, the Dodgers could use Giles' big league savvy. Asked about the trade talk, Giles said, "That's what I'm hearing." All indications point to rookie Jayson Nix starting at second base and Giles either being traded or receiving an outright release. The veteran isn't likely to accept his minor league assignment.

Jayson Nix will be the Rockies' starting second baseman when the opening day lineup is penciled in. Marcus Giles was sent down to Triple-A on Sunday signaling the Nix assignment, this according to the Rocky Mountain News. Giles hit .321 with the Rockies during spring training but was told he can talk with any team about a job. The report notes that there were indications the Los Angeles Dodgers had an interest in having Giles work out with them in the final week of spring training.

As his bid for the starting job at 2B continues, so does Marcus Giles 's ability to prove such a stance is worthy. Giles went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI in the Rockies' 4-9 loss to Seattle today. Giles is a veteran with a strong bat and a stronger sense of his mortality rate in Colorado. The big outings in recent days only proves he wants to be on the field. If he keeps it up, he'll get his wish.
