Player Notes
September 21, 2007
Jose Contreras has won his past four decisions and is 5-2 with a 3.11 ERA in his past nine outings, the AP reports. This takes some of the sting out of a terrible year, we suppose; he's lost 16 games this season, with a 5.51 ERA and 1.57 ratio. He's slated for two starts next week, if you're in a daring mood.

Jose Contreras posted his first victory as a starter in more than two months on Monday. He held the Devil Rays to four runs on eight hits over seven innings. Contreras had dropped nine straight starts since beating Florida on June 18 and had lost 13 of 14 before Monday's win.

Jose Contreras will start for the first time since July 31 on Friday against the Mariners. "We promised Jose he'd start Friday," manager Ozzie Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm a man of my word, he deserves it."

Jose Contreras will wait until next week to rejoin the Chicago rotation, according to the AP. The Sunday start against Seattle, initially slated to belong to Contreras, will now go to John Danks. "I think Jose should be a starter," manager Ozzie Guillen conceded Thursday.

Jose Contreras will get back on the mound to start Sunday's game. He had been pulled from the rotation due to his struggles, but the White Sox want to give John Danks a day off and Contreras another chance.

Jose Contreras has no problem going to the bullpen for the short-term, but the veteran wants to be a starter next year. "I accepted the bullpen assignment now because I fully understand I'm struggling right now," Contreras told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I'm aware that I'm going to be back, I'm going to be OK. I want to be a starter. If they don't want me as a starter next year, I want to be out of here." The struggling right-hander has lost seven straight starts and is 1-10 with an 8.87 ERA in his last 12 outings.

The White Sox will hand the ball to Gavin Floyd Sunday, skipping Jose Contreras in the rotation. "Right now that's what we've got to do for the good of Jose," manager Ozzie Guillen said in the AP. Contreras is 5-14 with a 6.60 ERA in 21 starts this season. The plan is for Contreras to miss one turn, but that may change if Floyd pitches well. "I think right now his head is spinning all over the place," Guillen said of Contreras. "He's a kid that's always pitched well and we'll see if this move helps him to get better for the rest of the season."
July 26, 2007
Jose Contreras is going to stick in the rotation despite his struggles. Manager Ozzie Guillen said he wouldn't demote Contreras to the bullpen because the pitcher "takes about an hour to get loose," according to the AP. He's posted an 8.27 ERA over his past 11 starts and has shown no signs of turning things around; on Wednesday, he allowed nine runs on 12 hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Jose Contreras has a no-trade clause in his contract, but he said Wednesday that he’d waive it if the White Sox want to move him before the July 31 trade deadline. “If [the White Sox] come to me and say they want to trade me, that means they want to get rid of you,” Contreras told the Chicago Sun-Times through a translator. “So I would just waive [the no-trade clause]. But I really want to be here.” The Mets have shown interest in Contreras.

Jose Contreras had been penciled in to start Sunday's game on short rest, but manager Ozzie Guillen changed his mind. "I don't want to lose my ace," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I want to keep my pitching staff as fresh as I can." Nick Masset will get the nod Sunday, and Contreras will take the mound on Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune.
May 18, 2007
Rather than calling someone up from the minor leagues, manager Ozzie Guillen has decided to start Jose Contreras on Sunday. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Guillen cleared the move with Contreras on Thursday, the day after the veteran threw 100 pitches in 6.2 innings during a loss to the Yankees. The move means Gavin Floyd will not be called up from Triple-A for a spot start, as reported earlier this week.

Ozzie Guillen says he's not concerned about the messy way Jose Contreras opened the year, the Chicago Tribune reports. Contreras was rocked for eight runs (seven earned) in an inning-plus of work Monday. "Every year, some player has problems," Guillen said. "His kids are sick, the wife is mad, the parents ask for money. There are a lot of problems out there, even bigger than that. Jose was fine, and I was satisfied with what he told me."

Jose Contreras' 2007 season didn't get off to a good start. Against the Indians on Monday, the right-hander was hammered for eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits and a walk in just one inning of work. His ERA on the year now sits at 63.00.
