He will start on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. He threw between 40 and 50 pitches during a pain-free bullpen session three days ago, prompting Astros manager Cecil Cooper to pencil in the righthander for Monday’s series opener with the Reds. "I’m confident that (the pain) is gone,” Cooper told the Astros’ web site. “But if he does say that he feels something, you’ve got to be extremely cautious with that. Oswalt threw 92 pitches today, and while 59 went for strikes, the Cubs were putting the bat on the ball and hitting him around the yard. Oswalt now carries a 6.00 ERA.

"It's not broken, so I should be able to pitch with it," he said on MLB.com. The righty said he felt pain the first few innings after being hit, but that it had nothing to do with his un-Oswalt-like performance (5 1/3 innings, three runs, 11 hits). "It has a mark on it, but it should be fine," he said. "I've been hit before. And I don't like it when the batters complain when they get hit." Oswalt should be good to go Saturday, though he has a tough matchup in Chicago.

"We told him to take what he needs and he said he'll be back Saturday," manager Cecil Cooper said. Oswalt continues to be one of the best starters in baseball now that he has overcome the injury bug that hampered him often earlier in his career as he has thrown at least 212 innings in four straight seasons during which time he has won at least 14 games each season.
