The AP reports that after throwing a short bullpen session Thursday, Ben Sheets isn’t sure if the sore elbow that has bothered him for more than a week will be ready in time for him to face the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. “This one’s up in the air,” Sheets said. Sveum said he assumes Sheets will say he can play, but feels the need to “look in his eyes” and determine if Sheets really is ready. “He’s going to have to be really honest with this one, because that game’s going to mean everything in the world,” Sveum said.

Ben Sheets says he is not ready to throw in the towel yet according to MLB.com. "I think (starting) Tuesday is a far fetch," Sheets said. "But I'm definitely not ruling [myself] out for the rest of the year. I think that's very possible." He has been receiving treatment for the injury since at least his Aug. 26 start at St. Louis, and Friday referred to the problem as tendinitis. An MRI scan earlier this month showed no structural damage, but Sheets conceded he has been worrying about the possibility of a more serious injury that would require Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, and before or during several of his starts had asked the team's athletic trainers to do a manual test to ensure the ligament was strong.

Yost has said the when the team acquired C.C. Sabathia that Seth McClung and Dave Bush would be the odd men out, which one will fill the final slot has yet to be determined. Sheets ended three innings of work with eight hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. Sheets noted this spring has reminded him of 2004, "My best year, I probably had my worst spring. I knew I was throwing the ball well, I know I'm throwing the ball well now." It may not be reason for major concern. It is spring ball. If you see his value drop in your fantasy league, it could be an excellent buy-low opportunity, but there should be no reason to believe these struggles will continue once games that count begin.
