Mike Maroth, who underwent shoulder surgery in May and was released by the Royals, said he intends to pitch in 2009, according to the Detroit Free Press. He said, "My arm feels really strong. I've already seen signs of a difference in how free my arm feels when I throw a ball."

The Royals released Mike Maroth Thursday. Maroth had been at Triple-A Omaha, where he held a 14.09 ERA over 7 2/3 innings.

Mike Maroth has been pushed back again after being slowed by tightness in his shoulder this spring, notes the KC Star. The veteran left was scratched from Thursday's work, his scheduled spring debut, and instead threw live batting practice on the practice fields. “He hasn’t had a setback,” Hillman said. “We’re just being careful. We want to make sure that soreness has totally disappeared." Maroth has little fantasy value, even in AL-only leagues and at this point is a long shot to make the rotation.

Mike Maroth is slated to test his sore shoulder by throwing in a bullpen on Monday, according to the KC Star. "I really let it go last Wednesday," he said, "and I felt it the next day. We just backed off." So long as everything goes well with his sore shoulder, Maroth should make his spring debut Thursday, as he tries to claim a spot in the Royals rotation.

The Royals signed Mike Maroth to a minor league contract on Friday, according to the AP. Maroth, who split the 2007 season with the Tigers and Cardinals, will be invited to the Royals' major league camp. He was awful last year, holding a 6.89 ERA and a 1.87 WHIP in 116 1/3 innings.
