Abe Alvarez has been released, according to the Providence Journal. The lefthander was at Triple-A Pawtucket and had been moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen this year. He held a 6.46 ERA over 13 games.

Abe Alvarez had surgery on his broken right ankle on Monday and will be out for the season, according to the Boston Herald. He posted a 12.00 ERA in three innings of work with the Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox optioned Abe Alvarez to Triple-A Pawtucket Monday to make room on the roster for David Riske, according to the AP. Alvarez allowed four runs in three innings in his lone appearance for the Sox.

To replace the injured Mike Holtz on the roster, the Red Sox called up Abe Alvarez from Triple-A Pawtucket Friday, according to the AP. Alvarez was 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA for Triple-A Pawtucket. The lefty will work in middle relief for the Sox.
