Ryan Zimmerman took 40 swings, but did not hit a ball, in order gauge how his shoulder felt, according to the Washington Post. He hopes to start a rehab assignment after the All-Star break, but it's still possible he'll have surgery.
June 30, 2008
According to the Washington Times, Nats skipper Manny Acta said Ryan Zimmerman, who has been on the disabled list since June 3 with a small labral tear in his left shoulder, has been able to start lifting weights and is close to being able to swing a bat, two major steps in the third baseman's return. “He'll be swinging the bat this next week. He's doing very well,” Acta said. “He's making a lot of progress.”

Ryan Zimmerman will likely begin to swing a bat next week, which is a good sign. He is out due to a small labral tear in his left shoulder, and he is trying to avoid surgery. The Nationals believe he will return this year, the Washington Post reports.

Ryan Zimmerman was told by doctors that his injured shoulder will require him to miss at least another 4-6 weeks, according to the Washington Post. The team is still hopeful that he will be able to avoid surgery, though Dr. Tim Kremcheck reported that he gives the rehab only a 70% chance of working.
