His velocity hasn't reached 90 mph in either of his first two starts, but the team stated that his health is fine. Manager Gonzalez noted, "The problem is that Miller is compensating his velocity by trying to be careful to throw more strikes. Against the Yankees, it was 92, 95, 97, and we haven't seen that since. Not even close. I don't want him to take away from his velocity to try to throw strikes. You want to see the zip, you want to see the life that hitters were missing." Miller also showed flashes of his dominating stuff with six strikeouts on the night, but he needed 90 pitches to make it through less than five innings. Until he learns to throw more quality strikes, Miller will likely struggle to be a productive fantasy hurler though there is no disputing the fact that he certainly possesses the stuff to be a dominating starter.
March 21, 2008
Andrew Miller, the sentimental favorite here at RotoTimes to get the opening day start for the Fish, allowed two runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings against Houston on Friday. The Astros used what appears to be their opening day lineup; Hunter Pence, Mark Loretta, Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada and others, so the appearance is promising for the young Miller. The upside to Miller's fantasy value is his strikeout potential, so the fact he registered but two K's in almost six spring innings is bit concerning.
March 3, 2008
The good news is that Andrew Miller held the Red Sox hitless over three innings on Monday. The bad news? Miller allowed one run thanks to the five walks he issued. Control was a major problem for Miller over his 13 starts with the Tigers in 2007, and the 21-year-old southpaw has to improve in this area before we'll take him seriously as a fantasy commodity.
February 17, 2008
Andrew Miller appears to be locked in to one of the Marlins five rotation spots barring a collapse in spring according to a report on MLB.com. The rotation will also include Scott Olsen, Mark Hendrickson and Sergio Mitre with Ricky Nolasco and Rick VandenHurk the leaders for the fifth spot in the rotation. Miller and Olsen could be two of the most dominant lefties in baseball over the next decade, though both need to work on their control, their common limiting factor on their path to success.
