The Devil Rays sent J.P. Howell to Triple-A Durham on Monday, according to the AP. He was 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA in eight starts for the Tampa Bay this season.

In order to keep J.P. Howell working, the Devil Rays optioned him to Triple-A Durham on Sunday. He'll make an abbreviated start there Thursday and take his regular turn on Monday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Barring an unexpected change, Howell will rejoin the Devil Rays to start one of the doubleheader games versus the Yankees on July 21.

Perhaps the Devil Rays shouldn't have waited so long to call J.P. Howell up. Howell allowed just one run on five hits and no walks while striking out seven over eight impressive innings Sunday. The former first-round pick is a solid pickup in AL-only leagues.

The Devil Rays called up J.P. Howell following Friday's game. He will start on Sunday against the Royal, the AP reports. Howell, 24, was 3-5 with a 3.96 ERA and 64 strikeouts over 63.2 innings at Triple-A Durham.

J.P. Howell may be promoted soon to take a spot in the Devil Rays rotation. The St. Petersburg Times reports that Jae Seo and Casey Fossum would be the most likely to lose their jobs.

J.P. Howell was optioned to Triple-A Wednesday, which means Edwin Jackson has won the No. 5 spot in the Devil Rays rotation. Both players had stingy ERAs this month (Howell 1.80, Jackson 1.84), so it wasn't an easy call for the club.

J.P. Howell will get a five-inning trial against the Reds Friday as the Devil Rays give him every shot to make the rotation, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Howell has a 1.80 ERA over 10 innings this spring.
