The Padres recalled Mike Thompson from Triple-A on Sunday. Thompson, who holds a 7.84 ERA in five relief appearances for San Diego this year, will work in middle relief, although it's possible he could receive a start if Chris Young isn't able to return from the DL to start on Thursday as planned.

Mike Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Wednesday, the AP reports. The Padres bullpen has been taxed of late, which is why adding Thompson made sense, but he's not going to pitch in a lot of high-leverage situations.

Mike Thompson pitched three scoreless innings Saturday and could be pitching himself into a bullpen job, according to the Union-Tribune. "He could step in as a spot starter in the first half of the season, but the longer you work relief the harder it is to all of a sudden stretch it out in a start," said pitching coach Darren Balsley. "But he'd be good in the bullpen. It doesn't take him many pitches to get ready, fewer than most starters. And he's got the right attitude."
