The Washington Nationals have named LHP Mike O'Connor as their starting pitcher for Saturday night's home game against the Florida Marlins, taking the place of LHP Matt Chico, according to MLB.com.

Mike O'Connor was recalled on Thursday as the Nationals optioned Ray King to Triple-A Columbus, according to MLB.com. "With our bullpen right now, we can't afford to have a lefty specialist like Ray to pitch to one or two guys," manager Manny Acta said. "We need a guy who can give us more than one inning, could pitch to lefties and righties and bridge the gap -- like O'Connor."

Michael O'Connor will not be tendered a contract by the Nationals. He posted a 4.80 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) in 2006 and didn't pitch in the big leagues last year due to elbow surgery.

The Nationals activated Michael O'Connor from the 60-day disabled list on Monday and sent him to Double-A Harrisburg, according to the AP. In 21 games (20 starts) with the Nats last year, he posted a 4.80 ERA.

Michael O'Connor, who is recovering from offseason elbow surgery, won't be ready to compete for a rotation spot in the spring, according to the AP. "Michael is not going to be ready to compete in spring training for one of those jobs," manager Manny Acta said Monday. "He's still in that rehab stage right now." It's not even certain when O'Connor will be ready to throw off a mound. Acta said he expects to look at 10 pitchers for the four open spots in the rotation.
