Mark Lowe was recalled by the Mariners from Triple-A Tacoma today. He has not been with the big club for the last week due to a foot injury.

Eric O'Flaherty was called on to clamp down the Seattle lead on Sunday, but was unable to close the deal after getting two outs in the ninth inning. O'Flaherty was not credited with a blown save, although he should have been, but actually was awarded a hold on the day. In two-thirds of an inning on Sunday, the left-handed specialist gave up two hits and two runs. Mark Lowe came in to try and put the fire out but threw a wild pitch, followed by one of his own two base runners scoring, and it was game over in Camden Yards. Lowe was hit with the loss and the blown save.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer confirms that Mark Lowe is likely to get most of the ninth inning chances while J.J. Putz is out. Miguel Batista picked up the save on Wednesday, but he was called upon due to his experience and because Lowe had worked the previous two days. Batista will start on Saturday.

Mark Lowe is believed to have have the inside track on the closer's job while JJ Putz is out, but he is going to have some competition, according to the Seattle Times. Sean Green and Eric O'Flaherty are also going to be tried out for the role.

Mark Lowe may be asked to do much more than setup the team's closer. He may be forced into the role due to the injury that has resulted in the Mariners placing J.J. Putz on the DL on Wednesday. The team had hoped that Brandon Morrow could fill the setup role this season and to fill in for Putz if any troubles arose, but given that Morrow was sent down to the minors because of a lack of control, the closer role would appear to be Lowe's hands for the time being, meaning you should run to waivers and pick him up if you have space on your roster though he may not be able to pitch on Wednesday since he has thrown in each of the first two games of the season.
