Jim Hoey, dealing with a sore pitching shoulder, isn't expected to be ready until early May, according to the Baltimore Sun. He had been in the mix to be the O's closer, but that job has gone to George Sherrill. We'll keep you posted on Hoey's progress.

An MRI taken of Jim Hoey's right shoulder last week revealed no tears, but he's still dealing with biceps tendinitis, according to the Baltimore Sun. "It's basically something we can manage," he said. "We just have to find the right combination (of treatment)." He'll remain shut down until the inflammation is reduced to a safe point, then he'll be cleared to throw again. An extended delay could affect his availability for the start of the season, though.

Jim Hoey headed back to Baltimore Wednesday to have an MRI taken of his right shoulder, according to the Baltimore Sun. "We got a good report on Jim," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "I don't know how long it's going to be, but the MRI didn't reveal anything of any structural concerns. I don't know whether it's a week, three weeks or what. All I know is there is nothing in there that's a concern long term." Hoey may rejoin the team on Friday to begin a treatment program, but it's not clear when he'll pitch again.

The Orioles avoided arbitration with Jim Hoey by signing the right-hander to a one-year deal Thursday. Financial terms aren't available at this time. Hoey struggled in his time with the O's last year, posting a 7.30 ERA in 23 games, but he has a terrific minor-league track record and is an option for the team's vacant closer spot.
