| The Houston Chronicle reports that Astros' GM Ed Wade is not confident in going with J.R. Towles as the catcher for next season. "We’re going to pay attention to what’s in the catching market and see if there’s a guy out there who can make sense for us and slide in here and at the very least do a good job until J.R. gets his feet under him or until other things happen,” Wade said. “The catching market is always tricky because it’s usually thin and the guys that are out there seem to sign pretty quickly.”

"The fact we’ve got (Darin) Erstad back and signed and people like (Reggie) Abercrombie and anything else we might be able to do during the offseason, there’s going to be some level of competition out there. | Brandon Backe has been arrested early Sunday morning (along with at least a half-dozen bystanders) after a fight broke out in Galveston, according to MLB.com. Backe was accused of resisting arrest, search and transportation by using force against an officer. He was released on bail and released the same day. The Astros stated, "We're aware of an incident involving Brandon. We have spoken with him regarding his his version of the event. Seeing this is a legal matter, any further comment on our part would be inappropriate."

| Doug Brocail's 2009 option has been declined by the Astros, according to the AP. But the team will still try to re-sign him and GM Ed Wade said, "Doug did a terrific job for us this year. He was a workhorse out of the bullpen and brought a solid veteran presence to our clubhouse. Although we’ve declined to exercise the 2009 option, it’s our hope that we can get Doug back here for next season. I have already spoken with him, and he expressed definite interest in being with us."
