A.J. Burnett allowed a first-inning run to the Yankees on Tuesday and then proceeded to shut the door. He worked eight innings and surrendered just five hits and one run. Burnett also struck out a season-high 13 batters.

Scott Rolen is currently rehabbing his sore left shoulder in Florida. The trainers are trying to "break up" the tissue in his shoulder to provide the third baseman with more flexibility, manager Cito Gaston informs MLB.com. Gaston is not sure if Rolen will be able to return to the lineup by next Tuesday, August 26.

The Blue Jays aren't counting on A.J. Burnett being part of their team in 2009. "It certainly looks like A.J. won’t be here," manager Cito Gaston tells the Toronto Star. "I don’t know, but we might have a few guys who can pick that slack up." Burnett says he hasn't made up his mind about opting out of the final two years of his contract. He can earn $24 million over 2009 and 2010.

The Blue Jays optioned Scott Richmond to Triple-A Syracuse Friday. GM J.P. Ricciardi said Richmond will probably be back up when rosters expand. "We haven't made our minds up on September call-ups yet but he did a good job, a real good job," Ricciardi said. "He came out of nowhere and put himself on the map. He kept us in three games. Going forward, he's definitely in our plans - that's great."

Any recovery time will depend on Downs' ability to plant his right foot during his throwing motion.
