Quarterback Alex Smith has a fracture of the coracoid process, a bone in the shoulder that is rarely broken, according to the Sacramento Bee. An MRI of the shoulder has been sent to Dr. James Andrews, who operated on Smith's separated shoulder in December. Smith won't decide on a course of action until Andrews looks at the results, but similar fractures have been treated with surgery and the insertion of pins.
Alex Smith is doubtful for Sunday's game against Arizona after suffering a setback regarding his surgically repaired right shoulder, according to the AP. The 49ers didnt disclose what was wrong with Smith, only saying the injury occurred without contact during practice Friday. Coach Mike Nolan added, "He will be consulting with his surgeon in Birmingham (Dr. James Andrews) for treatment recommendations. At this time there are no specifics to the injury or a timetable."
